Polished ceramic, quartz, high dielectric, sapphire, glass, fused silica, AlN and numerous other hard materials can be shipped from stock.
Aluminum Nitride (AlN) features a high thermal conductivity of 170 W/mK, excellent dielectric properties, and a low thermal expansion similar to silicon.
These characteristics make AlN ideal for electrically insulating nontoxic substrate material for hybrid, power and microwave electronics applications.

BeO AlN

Because of the safety controversy and also the cost, Beryllium Oxide has lost its popularity and Aluminum Nitride is replacing BeO in numerous applications. As the only other ceramic with high thermal conductivity, up to 200 W/mK, Aluminum Nitride substrates are available from Valley Design in a wide variety of sizes and thicknesses, many from stock. Aluminum Nitride (AlN) substrates come as-fired, and may be lapped to 25u” Ra, or polished to .5u” – 2u” Ra depending on the material quality.

Hybrid circuit designers sometimes choose Aluminum Nitride because they are not sure if alumina has the required thermal conductivity. Other times it is, of course, an absolute necessity. Beryllium Oxide substrates are being chosen less and less frequently in favor of non toxic AlN. Aluminum Nitride substrates can be used wherever thermo-mechanical or power dissipation properties are important such as highly integrated thick film and thin film components, water cooled power converters, and transmitter and HF diode substrates for use in satellite systems.

For good quality Aluminum Nitride substrates, it is essential to start with high purity AlN powders. Tape cast thickness up to 1.5 mm can be obtained within one step with optimized slurry.

Binder removal:
Heating in air between 150°C and 500°C. Above 650°C oxygen contamination will occur.

 

Sintering:
Aluminum Nitride sintering must be conducted in dry nitrogen atmosphere. Expected shrinkage approximately 18%.

NOTE: At room temperature, thermal conductivity of Aluminum Nitride Ceramics is independent of AlN grain size or number of grain-boundries, but, is controlled by the internal structure of the grains, such as the degree of oxidation (Oxygen contamination).

Recommended conditions:

Heating rate: 300°C/hr
Temperature: 1820°C 1 to 3 hr
Pressure: 1 to 10 atm
Holder: BN, BN coated alumina, or BN coated graphite
Cooling rate: 100°C/hr to 1200°C and then at 300°C/hr

This Aluminum Nitride manufacturing procedure should yield products with:

  • High thermal conductivity
  • High electrical resistivity
  • Low dielectric loss
  • High electrical breakdown voltage

Aluminum Nitride applications include substrates which require good thermal conductivity and heat sinks for semiconductor devices, power modules, mobile communications and multichip modules.

Ultra Thin

Valley Design stocks and processes a wide variety of materials for information display and related applications. These materials come in standard sizes or can be machined to your custom specifications.

Valley provides precision lapping, polishing, dicing, edge/angle polishing, fiber array polishing, grinding and coating services and manufactures substrates, windows, wafers, wedges, hot and cold mirrors, glass rods and spacers, lenses, beam splitters, wave guides and other components. Valley routinely processes wafers to SEMI specs up to 300 mm diameter, and larger by request.

Specialties are Ultra-Thin (as thin as 12.5 microns), Ultra-Flat (1/20 wave), Super polishing (<10/5 scratch/dig or 5-10 angstroms), tight tolerances (± 1 micron) and dicing as small as .005″ square. The end faces and outer diameters of many of these materials can also be optically polished.

· 1737F: Near zero alkali aluminosilicate composition glass, economically priced, withstands rigorous thermal cycles of polysilicate transistor processes. Used as substrates for electronic thin film circuits, polysilicate transistor processes, active matrix flat panel displays, microdisplays, TFTs and AMLCDs.

· B270/Crown Glass: High transparency material with uniform optical transmission characteristics in the visible spectrum as well as the IR and UV regions. Applications include display covers, high resolution scanners, optical elements for light sensors, optical windows, substrates, lenses.

· Borosilicates: (AF-45, D263, 7059, Borofloat) Low alkali glass featuring excellent thermal resistance, low coefficient of thermal expansion and optical transmission. These glasses can be used in thin film devices, LDC (active matrix), electroluminescent displays, CCD covers, solar cells, hybrid circuits and as coating, filter, and electronic substrates.

· Float Glass: Economically priced commercial grade material with a high coefficient of expansion and excellent optical characteristics. Float glass can be used for flat panel displays and windows for numerous optical applications.

· Fused Silica/Fused Quartz: Very high UV transmission, extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion, high temperature and chemical resistance, low loss dielectric properties, electrically insulating. Applications include optical reference flats, windows, mirrors, test plates, high temperature view ports, optical components, aerospace applications, solar cells and passive energy collectors.

· Pyrex: Low coefficient of thermal expansion, high chemical, acid and temperature resistance, high energy transmission with wider spectral band than soda lime in both infrared and ultraviolet ranges. Used for dielectric coating substrates, neutron absorbers and in high temperature, long-term, extreme environmental applications.

DBC

Sapphire

EPI finish on sapphire has become to mean that the finish shall be 3 Angstroms Ra or less.

A common EPI polished sapphire substrate requirement is for manufacture of bright blue and green LEDs.

The tightest tolerance ultra-flat Blue and Green LED 2 in. (50.8 mm) polished Optical Grade Monocrystaline sapphire wafers:

Orientation C-plane (0001) ±0.1 deg.
Diameter 50.8 ±0.05 mm (2 ±0.002 in.)
Thickness 330 ±10 microns or 430 ±10 microns
Thickness variation – TTV less than 10 microns
