Sapphire wafers and substrates are available in all orientations with the more common ones being
R-plane (1-102),
A-plane (11-20) also referred to as 90-degree Sapphire and
C-plane (0001) referred to as 0-degree or basal plane Sapphire. Valley also stocks Silicon on Sapphire
(SOS) wafers.
Because it is an anisotropic hexagonal/rhomohedral crystal, some properties depend on the crystallographic direction and these directions are specified relative to the optical C-axis.
